最后,在继续回答问题之前,我只需要在回答前放一个很大的恕我直言– all of these answers 是 very much my own opinion 和 whilst I value my opinion quite highly I’a知道,并非所有人都可能非常重视它。
2 – If there 是 no library 职位 out there, 和 seemingly not much prospect in the near future, is it worth somebody’进行图书馆学习并获得图书馆资格证书时?
I would answer this 通过 saying if you 真实ly want to work in 图书馆 / Information field then yes it is most definitely worth 做 ing a course. In the coming years, good luck to anyone without a MLIS qualification trying to get an information science related 发布. I would also say if you 是 hoping to get 真实 work any time soon on the back of it look at being pragmatic 和 maybe 做 a course that will prepare you for the only sectors that seem to be hiring –档案和存储库以及少数私人图书馆(例如法律图书馆)。
3 – If there 是 no 职位 is it ‘moral’让大学部门继续招收毕业生,并在有薪水的情况下拿走他们的钱’t seem to be any 真实istic chance of a job afterwards?
我会 nail my dark colours to the mast 这里 - I personally feel it is not 道德 for a University to offer fee based courses when they 是 aware there 是 no 职位 in that field. But equally I can not condemn any institution for 做 ing so. I live in the 真实 world –我们生活在资本主义社会– the market decides. People 是 part of the market. As long as we 是 willing to pay for a service, businesses 和 institutions, also part of the market, will offer these services. This is bright as day common sense 和 makes the world as we know it turn.
如果图书馆和图书馆管理者可以弥补便宜的差距,那么这样做是有道理的– there is little money to go round 和 anyway that can save money, without reducing or undermining the service, needs to be looked at. If the interns 是 being hired to supplement the existing staff then the current existing gaps will be plugged 和 services will continue to be offered –对于最终用户而言,这将照常进行,这对于图书馆管理员和资助他们的人来说是个好消息。
6 – 是 there enough unemployed MLIS graduates looking for employment to enable gap plugging for many years?
7 – Do the people 做 ing the hiring believe that libraries can be staffed solely with interns as some job bridge adverts 是 advertising?
What can I say? I would certainly hope not! I would hope that the people 做 ing the hiring 是 more than mere bean counters. I like to think they look beyond the bottom cent. I would hope they have an idea of what is involved in the day to day running of a library. I would hope they can move from the strategic sphere into the operational sphere 和 see what is required for the day to day running 和 operation of a library. Much of what we 做 on a day to day basis needs practical experience, which is not taught, in library school.
Of course they can. But if you 是 library manager 做 ing the hiring you would have to be lucky, very lucky, to get the sort of person who can come into a library with no experience 和 actually start to run it to any sort of decent standard from day one. Experience 做 es count. How much experience obviously will depend on the position but I personally, if I were in the enviable position of hiring staff, would not hire a candidate who 做 es not have experience.
If it is the case that in the future libraries 是 going to be run 通过 non academically qualified staff then obviously there would be no need to get such a qualification. But I think with the amount of graduates being churned out finding a person with an LIS qualification is not going to be the problem. With the current 做 wnturn in library positions it will be finding a person with experience.
9 – What 做 all these questions say about where we, as a profession 是, in 2014? And where 做 we go?
I would think we 是 in a particularly sensitive place. With no 职位 being created, at least in the public sector where most Irish library 和 information science related staff work, it creates uncertainty for those qualifying 和 who have recently qualified. If there 是 no positions now what happens in ten, fifteen, twenty years when people who would have been gaining experience at the lower ranks have not gained experience 和 the only positions becoming available 是 higher rank positions…
另一种选择是切断鼻子以消除面部表情– for people not to take internship positions but this, I feel, will not benefit people who 是 真实ly seeking LIS work. It’s a case of taking the medicine for the duration, getting better [at your job] 和 hopefully getting your reward, a 真正的工作, somewhere 做 wn the, hopefully not too long, road. Because, to be honest, if you can get that full time position, there is no more rewarding enjoyable fulfilling job out there. IMHO.
